Why looking at a photo of a smell trains your nose
Smell fills in the picture by itself
Of all the senses, smell depends on context most. People confidently name the same odour differently depending on what they were told beforehand and what they can see. This is not a weakness of perception but how it is built: the olfactory signal is faint and blurry, and the brain routinely completes it with what arrives through other channels.
That leads to a counterintuitive conclusion for training. If the brain leans on vision, memory and naming anyway, there is no sense fighting that support — it should be used.
What the picture gives you
When you look at a cut lemon and breathe in, two streams work at once: the visual one, which is currently fine, and the olfactory one, which is weakened. The strong stream sets an expectation; the weak one tries to match it.
For the brain that is a prompt of the kind a teacher gives: "it should resemble this." The mismatch between the expectation and what actually arrived is precisely the signal to rewire. Without an expectation there is nothing to compare the error against, and nothing to learn from.
That is why every odour in the app comes with a vivid photograph rather than a caption. The difference between the word "lemon" and a photograph of a juicy slice is the difference between a reminder and a stimulus.
What naming and memory give you
The second layer is language. A named odour is processed differently from a nameless one: the whole network in which that word lives is engaged. So the "remember" step in the protocol is not decoration — trying to pull up a specific scene, lemon tea in childhood, a grandmother's cinnamon tin, activates the very memory structures smell is wired to.
This is what separates mechanically holding a vial to your nose from a deliberate session. The physical stimulus is the same in both. The work the brain does is not.
How the app implements it
Every odour is split into four steps, and the split is not arbitrary:
Look. A vivid photograph sets the expectation before the odour arrives.
Inhale. Slowly, in a breathing rhythm — the olfactory epithelium sits high in the nose, and a calm deep breath carries more molecules to it than a sharp sniff.
Remember. A specific scene, not an abstraction. The more personal, the better.
Integrate. Look and breathe together, so the image and the sensation meet.
A session of six odours takes about ten minutes. It is not an exercise for the sake of it: each step gives the brain a support it is currently missing.
One caveat
Multisensory support does not replace the stimulus. Looking at a photo of a lemon without a lemon is not smell training. The real odour is mandatory; the picture and the memory only amplify what it provides.
